A Small Dog named Trevor

by Becky Sunshine

Trevor spent his days sniffing the rocks along the railroad tracks and one bright, sunny day, being that Trevor couldn't hear too well and only relied on the vibrations, he looked up and suddenly noticed the train coming at him at a train-like speed. Trevor tried to jump across the tracks - and why he did that instead of moving away turning to the left we will never know - but he jumped across and, sorry to say, he wasn't fast enough and that train just smashed right into him, carrying him along to the next destination.

Oh I'm only kidding whichya.... sorry! Here's the real story...

Trevor spent his solitary, mid-life dog days walking along the road, moving from one home to the next, begging for food or love, whichever the homeowner could give him.

One time he spent a total of 26 days at a home that had an extremely overweight black and white cat named Seger (after Bob), who had no sense of humor, and three children, the oldest of which liked to chase Trevor around with a squirt gun in the fenced-in backyard of their two-storey townhouse. Trevor, being the independent sort, didn't want to be rude or ungrateful but he liked being on his own and he liked the variety of situations in his life so he moved on when he figured a way out of that beautifully fenced-in backyard, which wasn't difficult given his size and clever nature. It's not that Trevor didn't like company, he did get lonely but he also liked his independence.

Trevor, a Yorkie/pug mix had quite the adorable quality about him which helped him last as long as he did. He wasn't the cutest dog on the block, and he knew that, but he had a perkiness about him which made people want to like him. When he was a puppy, he was adopted by a woman who called him Gotee, as in the beard and mustache style that men wear. When Trevor struck out on his own he renamed himself. He always liked the name Trevor, it had a French sound to it, maybe it was French now that he came to think about it.

The place where Trevor grew up until he was almost three was a pleasant home. However, he spent quite a bit of time alone since the woman had a busy career and social life. She wanted him for the company at first but then he sort of became a hindrance to her lifestyle. She couldn't just jet off to far away places without arranging care for him and she actually felt bad that he didn't have much company. So one rainy afternoon she took Trevor to the animal rescue explaining about her busy lifestyle while the woman in charge of the rescue listened with pursed lips and a disapproving glare about her eyes.

This is what started Trevor's adventure in the big world. He was adopted right away by a woman with a small, very timid girl named Lily. She was afraid of Trevor at first but soon they became best friends. The fact that Lily was so shy meant she didn't have many playmates. Trevor took care of that problem for her. He'd go up to the nearest neighborhood child while Lily had him on a leash and he'd strike up a conversation in only a way that Trevor could. Lily became fast friends with several kids in the neighborhood and her timidity wore off.

This was about the same time Trevor decided he had a certain calling in his life. To make people feel their worth. It wasn't hard to do really. Add a smile to someone's face or make them feel less lonely. He could do tricks and make people laugh. This is how he spent the past few years of his life, roaming the country and improving the lives of people around him, or so he hoped. He had made quite a few friends this way. The one thing that was missing was a true home for the small dog. He wasn't ready to settle down just yet but he hoped that someday, before it was too late, he'd find someone that might just take care of him when he needed it.

He wasn't all that tired yet, as a matter of fact he was starting on another new adventure, just leaving the home of an elderly woman who had lost her husband not too long ago and Trevor had happened upon her at the market. He spent his days reminiscing with the woman about her husband by settling in on her lap in the afternoons and looking through photo albums. This gave great comfort to the woman and, in time, the pain of losing her husband grew less, the woman became more able to socialize with her friends and left Trevor to himself once again.

The new adventure started out pretty well but Trevor realized he had an ache in his side. He wasn't sure but he thought he might have to turn around and go back to the woman's house when suddenly a red-haired boy about the age of nine walked over and picked him up. Trevor gave out a tiny little yip but the boy held him tight and took him home. The boy, being of determined spirit and impish grin, talked his mother into keeping the small dog in their little apartment. Trevor seemed happy at first and as he looked out the sliding glass door at the horses in the field across the parking lot from the balcony he decided his travels had come to a halt for a while. He enjoyed being taken care of while his ache subsided.

Now I have no idea how this story turns out. You'll have to decide for yourself. Trevor just hopes that he brought some extra light into his friends' lives that he met along his travels.
