Frequently Asked Questions

I thought this site was called Meadhall Nine or something?

Indeed it was... for ten years to be exact. I originally set this site up to promote my own performance poetry work and work by others and the Meadhall Nine theme fitted in with one of my poetry ideas. Since I have done no performing of any description since 2007 and written no poetry since 2006 I felt it was time for a change.

I was looking for the Lone Magpie Page?

I'm afraid the Lone Magpie Page, although popular and given quite high praise on a links page some years ago, has flown away. It was great fun at the time but it's simply no longer on my agenda so rather than doing it half-heartedly and subsequently badly I've decided to let it go. If anyone is curious about magpie customs and superstitions, I believe that a blog to which people can contribute and subscribe could prove a success - if anyone does decide to do this, let me know and I'll set up a link here. You will find some very good magpie links at Wisdom Portal.

Why is the site called Tomorrow's Soup?

It started off in one of those "what are you doing now" status update things you seem to get everywhere these days. I wrote something like "Finished preparing tomorrow's soup, now it's gently simmering..." The great photographer Simon Jacobs commented on this writing "Tomorrow's soup sounds like an episode of Dr Who or your memoirs or something..." I thought this was a damned fine idea but since I have no plans to write an episode for Dr Who or a write a memoir I thought I would use it for this website...

What is the motto of this site?

Now this a curious one... This isn't a frequently asked question, it was only asked once by a particularly unpleasant-sounding individual and back then I wasn't interested in assigning any motto apart from: "Mottos, like mission statements, are shite" Fast forward eight or nine years and what do you find on the home page? "Making the best of everything to hand today to create something new for tomorrow..." Well, well, well... my site finally has a motto... What does the motto mean? Ahhhh, that would be telling...

A painting of a little white chicken What on earth is the favicon icon supposed to be of?

At the moment it's of a little white chicken... chicken... chicken soup... Tomorrow's Soup... It was a tiny detail on one of a herd of modal elephants which were on display in London until June 2010 - I should have noted who the artist was but I didn't have a pen with me... Anyway, here's a larger version of the image so you can it properly...

What is the ideal screen resolution/browser for this site?

This site has been created on a MacBook using the brilliant Safari browser at a screen resolution of 1280 x 800... did you really need to know that? I see this kind of information displayed on home pages and I can honestly say that in more than a decade of using the web I have never once felt the urge to fire up the appropriate browser, let alone adjust my set...

Will I provide you copies of my poems or pictures?

That depends... If you write in with a polite, clear request like the good folk from Wimbledon Windmill did then I'll be happy to discuss it... If, however, - pay attention the person who wrote in to demand a particular poem not so long ago - you don't tell me what you want them for and don't even have the decency to say please then I probably won't even bother to reply...

I came here looking for the Beowulf poem - why can't I find it?

You can't find the Beowulf poem here because it isn't my poem to publish. I didn't write it or translate it, I simply happened to be named after it... I hope that is clear to the extremely irate visitor who wrote in with this demand. I wondered then, as I wonder now, what was stopping her from getting off her lazy, irate, whining backside, waddling down to the library or bookshop and getting a copy for herself... I hope you failed whatever it was you needed it for! And while we're on the subject of the Beowulf poem, no I will not provide information for your essay / term paper / presentation / class project - go do your own research like you're supposed to - you lazy git - I hope you fail as well!
